Combating Cross-Infection Risks in Ultrasound with Effective and Efficient Solutions
- Webinar On Demand -

MarketsandMarkets 7th Annual Infection Control, Sterilization & Decontamination in Healthcare Conference, UK.

The speakers discuss their latest research relating to the risks of cross-infection in ultrasound and what are the benefits of an automated High level disinfection system and the microbiological efficacy of UVC vs alternative HLD methods.

  • Pavan Pankhania (European Product Manager, Germitec),
  • Ursula Morby (Decontamination Lead, UL Hospital Limerick)
  • Dr Shanom Ali (Associate Professor of Microbiology, UCL)

Key Learning Objectives

  • Why is Ultrasound a high-risk area for cross-infection?
  • What research tells us is the best practice method for High Level Disinfection (HLD) ultrasound probes?
  • What is the effectiveness of using UVC to HLD Ultrasound probes.
  • How using a UVC HLD can be a sustainable, ultrafast method of improving compliance whilst saving time costs?

What is the Impact of Automated High Level Disinfection on Microbial Colinization in Ultrasound Endocavity Probes

  • Ursula Morby (Decontamination Lead, UL Hospital Limerick)

Key Findings from the systematic review

  • Endocavitry probes were not always disinfected sufficiently.
  • Endocavitry probes may be the catalysis that allows the spread of infection.
  • Automated high level disinfection is more effective and efficient at decontaminating endocavitry probes which improves patient safety

Comparison of Manual vs. Automated technologies for the disinfection of transvaginal ultrasound probes

  • Dr Shanom Ali (Associate Professor of Microbiology, UCL)

Aims: Efficacy of manual vs automated disinfection of transvaginal ultrasound probe.

Methods: Protocol – Marked probe with 1 cm2 test areas

Results: detergent cleaning only; removed some bacteria and moved bacteria that accumulated at the distal part of the probe. Extra attention and focus need to be made to these accumulative high-risk or hot spots.

  • Manual wiping causes accumulation of bacteria to the terminal part of the wiping motion;
  • Therefore high level disinfection to supplement disinfection is essential

Automated technologies are effective methods of high level disinfection for ultrasound probes.
